Winter Golf Tips

Out here on the Western Slope, winter golf is a real thing. As long as the sun is shining and the greens are clear, Redlands Mesa will often be open even on cold days. But winter golf plays differently than summer golf, and knowing what to expect makes the whole experience more enjoyable. Here are our best tips for playing well when the temperatures drop.
Dress in Layers
This is the most important thing you can do to have a good time in cold weather. Layers let you adapt as the temperature shifts — and it will shift, especially here in Grand Junction where mornings can be cold and midday can feel almost warm. An insulated vest is a great option because it keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free for a full swing. Add a wind-resistant outer shell you can pull on or off as needed. A buff or neck gaiter is worth having for when you're riding in the cart. And don't forget warm golf gloves and a hat. Cold hands kill feel and cold ears kill focus.
Stay Hydrated
You might not feel as thirsty in winter as you do in the summer heat, but you still need water. The air in Grand Junction is dry, and being well-hydrated actually helps keep your fingers and toes warmer. Skip the ice in your water bottle and drink consistently throughout the round just as you would in summer.
Expect More Roll, Less Carry
This is the key adjustment most golfers don't think about until it costs them. In cold temperatures, the ball doesn't compress as well, which means it won't fly as far. But on firm winter fairways and firm greens, the ball will roll out much more than it does in summer. For most shots this balances out, but pay attention on approach shots — your ball is going to run well past the flag if the greens are hard. Factor that in before you pick your club.
Adjust for Tighter Lies
Grass isn't growing in winter, so the lies in the fairway will be tighter and drier than what you're used to in the growing season. Fairway woods can be tough to hit cleanly off these tight lies. If you're struggling with your 3-wood or 5-wood, consider swapping them out for a hybrid or long iron that's easier to make solid contact with when the turf is firm underneath.
Call Ahead Before You Come Out
Winter weather in Grand Junction can change fast. Frost delays are common in the morning, and an overnight cold snap can temporarily close the course. Always call ahead before you make the trip.
