Playing Winter Golf

Out here in Western Colorado, winter golf is a real thing. While golfers in colder parts of the country are putting their clubs away in November and not taking them out until April, the Grand Junction area gives us a much longer window. When the weather cooperates, there's no reason to stop playing. Here's how to make the most of your winter rounds at Redlands Mesa.

Dress in Layers

The most important thing about playing in cold weather is staying warm without restricting your swing. The key is layering. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid-layer for insulation, and finish with a wind-resistant outer layer that still allows you to rotate. Avoid bulky winter jackets that lock up your shoulders. A good layering system lets you add or remove pieces as the temperature changes throughout the round.

Give Yourself Extra Club

Cold air is denser than warm air, and cold muscles don't generate as much clubhead speed. That combination means your shots won't travel as far in winter conditions. Plan on taking at least one extra club for most shots. If you'd normally hit a 7-iron from 150 yards, consider a 6-iron instead. Don't fight the physics. Club up and swing smooth.

Warm Up Your Body Before You Play

Cold muscles are stiff muscles, and stiff muscles don't swing freely. Spend extra time warming up before your round. Do some light stretching, swing a weighted club or two irons together to loosen your shoulders, and make sure your body is moving before you hit the first tee. Winter rounds that start without a proper warm-up usually end in frustration and soreness.

Protect Your Hands

Cold hands kill your feel and your grip pressure. A good pair of golf gloves designed for cold weather makes a real difference. Some golfers wear two gloves in winter, which is completely fine. Hand warmers in your pockets are also a smart move. Keep your gloves on between shots to maintain warmth and pull one off only when you're about to swing.

Manage Your Expectations

Winter golf is a different experience than summer golf. The fairways are slower, the greens are firmer, the ball doesn't fly as far, and conditions can change quickly. Go into your winter rounds with the mindset of enjoying the fresh air and staying sharp rather than shooting your personal best. The players who handle winter golf best are the ones who adapt their expectations to match the conditions.
