Keep It in the Fairway: 3 Tips for Staying Out of the Rough

The rough is where scores go to die. One bad drive can turn a par into a bogey before you've even reached the green. The good news is that hitting the fairway consistently isn't just about raw swing talent. It's about smart setup, controlled tempo, and a few habits that lower your miss percentage over time. Here are three tips for keeping the ball in short grass.
1. Aim at a Specific Target, Not Just the Fairway
Vague targets produce vague results. When you step onto the tee box and think "I just need to hit the fairway," you're giving your brain too much room. Instead, pick a specific intermediate target: a discoloration on the grass, a shadow, a distant tree, or a landmark in the distance. The more specific your target, the more precisely your body can organize itself to hit it. This is one of the simplest and most effective adjustments any golfer can make.
2. Take Less Club and Swing Easier
Distance is important, but it's not worth it if you're hitting from the rough on every hole. Many golfers try to max out their driver on every tee, even on tight holes where the risk isn't worth the reward. Consider hitting a 3-wood or hybrid off the tee on demanding holes. A club that gives you more control and a shorter carry will find more fairways and leave you in better position. The score you save from the rough will more than make up for the few yards you give up off the tee.
3. Fix Your Swing Path
The most common reason recreational golfers miss fairways is an out-to-in swing path that produces a slice. The ball starts left of the target line and curves right, often into the rough or worse. A simple drill: lay an alignment stick on the ground pointing at your target and practice swinging on a path that goes out and to the right of the stick through impact. This feels strange at first if you're used to coming over the top, but it produces a straight or draw ball flight that holds the fairway much more effectively.
If your swing path is a persistent problem, working with an instructor can help you identify the root cause faster than practicing on your own. Our private golf lessons at Redlands Mesa are designed to give you targeted feedback that makes a real difference. We also offer group golf clinics if you prefer to work on your game alongside other players. Either way, straighter drives are closer than you think.
