Why we call Grand Junction Home

When thinking about living in the Grand Valley, very few people that are not local have any idea what surrounds us. We think this video does a great job showing just a few of the things available and illustrates some amazing scenery of our area.

We would like to see them add a few holes of golf to their day, maybe next time! We live and work at Redlands Mesa and for those who have not experienced it, they may have no idea how beautiful it is.

Why we heavy Top-dress the greens for winter

I get asked all the time on why here at Redlands Mesa Golf Club do we put down a heavy top-dress for winter time and other courses don’t? Utilizing a heavier than normal topdressing before winter can help in the protection of the greens, but it is not a one size fits all approach. All maintenance practices have advantages at different locations for different reasons. I cannot speak for the other golf courses in and around the valley on why they do it or why they don’t do it.

Here at Redlands Mesa, we believe that a heavy top-dress gives us the best chances of protecting our greens from exposure from wind, prone long periods of sun, and traffic. Areas of the region that are assured of adequate snow cover already have one of the best protection products going, snow. Our course does not always get snow in the winter time, which is the biggest factor on why we do it.

Being exposed to the elements of winter and still allowing the play of golf on our greens during this time is very stressful to leaf tissue and the crown of the plant. By putting down a blanket of sand to protect the turf increases the chances that our greens will have less damage next spring. The other added benefit to doing a heavy top-dress is that it will smooth out the greens and make for a better ball roll next season.

Final thought is that it is getting harder to predict what Mother Nature will do. The Redlands Mesa maintenance team is always fighting against her no matter what time of year it is. Our goal is always to make the golf course the best it can be during the warmer months when it’s the best time to play.  Please keep this thought in mind when you are playing in 20 degree weather and you came up short on your putt because there is too much sand on the green.  I promise you that won’t be a factor next spring.

Feels like fall today

The course is in great shape and we think the best time of year to play. We kind of take for granted what we have in our back yard and I am always amazed that we continually hear from locals that they thought the course was private, it is not, we invite you to come and play.

This article was just written about our course and we were named yet again as one of the Top Courses You Can Play by Golf Magazine. The grounds crew has done such an amazing job and the weather is cooling down so things are looking so good. Come out, see for yourself what everyone is talking about.

“Redlands Mesa is another classic Jim Engh designed track including 11 elevated tee boxes. The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa appears to be a lush dark green carpet flowing through rugged red rock formations with a backdrop of the beautiful Colorado National Monument. Who could ask for anything more for super photo ops?” Read more by Sam Sherstad

Sticks and Chicks

Golf with friends, a few cold beverages and incredible food…what more can a girl ask for? The last couple Sunday afternoons, Shad and I have had the joy of ditching the kids and heading out to meet a few new friends and play golf…you would think we get out all the time to play golf, but not so, life gets in the way, as do kids…But we hope we can make this happen more often.

Sticks and Chicks are a great group of couples, singles (equal men and women), who just go out to have fun. There is no serious competition here, no pressure and certainly a lot of laughs. Cindy and Rob Willms have endless energy…and have spearheaded this group. I love the format, 4 person scramble, and simply go out to hope for some good shots, minimizing the not so good ones, maybe even sneaking in a mulligan or two.

A BIG shout out to the Sticks, you guys are the best, always patient with us Chicks…and you know it is always more fun to have the Chicks around anyway, even it we top the ball all to often. Ok there are a few Chicks who can hold their own for sure, Jessie among the top; you know what they say about the color pink..own it girly, she did single handedly win the tiebreaker.

Anyway, the point of this post is to get across to you that this event is all about having fun! We are not here for a Big Win…we are here to play, hang with friends, meet new friends, catch some fresh air, be outside, drink a beer or two…And finish by supporting one of GJ’s newest restaurants, Clubhouse 2325, which is by far the coolest place in town, hands down the best views, food is always good and service too.

Lyle, the Chef continues to knock our socks off with specials each week as they expand their menu…I understand we can select Prime Rib this Sunday (whoo hoo) So not only is the golf good, but we finally have a neighborhood restaurant that has stepped up to the tee and hit it long.

I hope you guys come join us one of these days, bring friends, bring spouses…Nine and Dine.

Cya on the tee box,

Nattana, Shad’s better half 🙂

Golf Course will open Saturday, February 20!

Call us at 970-263-9270 to make a tee time. Tee times can be made up to 7 days in advance for regular public and 2 weeks in advance for our Members.

The weather is supposed to be great so get out here and enjoy Redlands Mesa.
